European Conference: "International Theatre Festivals between Tradition and Innovation"

Theatre festivals reflect the artistic work in the respective country. They are an excellent network of practical theatre work and they are of decisive importance for the further development of amateur theatre.

In Europe there are various international amateur theatre festivals which take place regularly every year or every two years. These theatre festivals partly have a long tradition and they are very important for the artistic and structural development of amateur theatre in Europe.

  • The amateur theatre festival in Hronov, Czech Republic
  • The int. theatre festival in Kazincbarcika, Hungary
  • The int. theatre festival "Estivades" in Belgium
  • The int. amateur theatre festival "El Pati" in Girona, Catalonia / Spain
  • The int. youth theatre festival "Sapperlot" in Brixen, South Tyrol / Italy
  • The World Festival of Amateur Theatre in Monaco
  • The "Theatre Days of European Cultures" in Paderborn, Germany
  • The "European Amateur Theatre Days" in Rudolstadt (Thuringia), Germany
  • The "Theatertage am See" in Friedrichshafen, Germany
  • The int. amateur theatre festival "Scena" - "Theatre and Religion"
  • The World Festival of Childrenīs Theatre in Lingen (Ems), Germany

In this European conference international festivals and their specific forms will be presented. The aim of this conference is to improve cooperation between the organisers of festivals, to establish guidelines for international festivals and to make up a European festival plan. Moreover, criteria of quality will be established for the selection of theatre productions. Through an intensive exchange of experience the participants will get new impulses for an effective organisation.

During the conference, the following themes will be discussed: - Planning and organisation of a festival - Criteria of quality for the selection of groups - Forms of afterward discussion and criticism of the productions - Festival structures having a special theme or a special target group - Prizes and estimation - Financing levels and structures

Festival directors and organisers, as well as the administrators of the National Centres of IATA/AITA and of theatre associations in Europe are invited to take part in this conference.

Conference languages are German and English. The conference will be chaired by Norbert Radermacher, director of the European Centre Européen. The conference will be organised by the European Centre Européen of IATA/AITA (International Amateur Theatre Association).
